Your Door, Now on Your Screen

Imagine a smart, minimalist doorbell that never lets you miss a visitor or delivery. Our project set out to build a native mobile/tablet app for iOS and Android that gives tech-savvy users (15–40 yrs) instant, intuitive control over a WiFi-enabled doorbell. Working as a two‑person team, we focused on making it extremely easy to use, from the first setup to everyday interactions.


In practice, that means one tap to see who’s at the door (streaming HD video), one tap to talk, and seamless swipes to navigate alerts and settings. We prioritized user-centric principles – learnability and efficiency – so that even new users can master the app quicklyintuitiveliving.au. Ultimately, our goal was to give users peace of mind at a glance: whether they’re on the couch or across town, they should feel “always home” when their doorbell rings.

The Problem We Rang the Bell On

When the doorbell chimes, you need to answer – but you might be away from home, busy cooking, or caught up in work. This common scenario motivated our design. Smart doorbells promise security and convenience, but many apps complicate simple tasks.


The problem was clear: existing solutions often require multiple taps just to view a visitor or adjust settings, and users can get confused about where to find essential controls. Our challenge was to design the flow so that checking the front door – whether via a real-time camera feed or past recordings – feels as straightforward as answering a phone call.

[ Competitive Research ]

Listening at the Door

We studied leading products like Ring, Nest Hello, and others to see what works and what trips users up. From published usability tests on Ring’s app, we learned that newcomers often mistook the UI’s structure, searching for “device settings” in generic menus instead of the dedicated device section. We also noted Ring’s dashboard had icons that looked static rather than tappable, and terms like “motion” were used so broadly they confused users.


These insights told us to keep familiar UI patterns (like a bottom nav bar) for comfort, use clear, distinct labels (avoiding jargon), and surface critical controls (e.g. mute chime) prominently.
